“Somebody”: Put That in Your Pipe

There are times when you hear a song and just know; you know that this is special and you just feel that everything coming out is so real and so genuine. “Somebody” by Dublin-based rock band Emily 7 is something that simply blows the competition out of the water and, on a personal level, really gives me hope for the future of bands.

Whilst being one of the most promising times for the independent music scene in history, with so many acts around it can be difficult to break onto the scene. This however, this stands out. With a number one spot on both the Irish iTunes singles charts and the alternative singles charts after being out for only 12 days at the time of writing this review. To top it off, a tweet from Liam Gallagher (yes, THE Liam Gallagher of Oasis) commending the band on their latest single shows that this is just the beginning for the group.

From a musical perspective, this is everything you’d want from a rock song and more. It features 60’s rock ‘n’ roll guitar licks, raspy, Gallagher-esque vocals and healthy dose of punk influences for good measure. Think Courtney Barnett meets Jet at an “oldies” night where they play nothing but Chuck Berry. This is a track you do not want to miss under any circumstance.

Ireland have produced a lot of bands over the years that have gone on to firmly establish themselves on the worldwide music scene; The Script, Thin Lizzy and U2 to name a few. With Emily 7, I honestly think we have another on our hands and I for one could not be more excited. This is not only one of the best Irish rock songs I’ve heard in a long time, this is one of the best rock songs I’ve heard in a long time. Period. They are definitely top of my list for acts I want to see live when this pandemic is over.
